(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- There is some promising news for women who experience hypoactive sexual disorder (HDSS), or low sex drive. Researchers have found a drug commonly used to treat depression may help.

Doctors at Case Western Reserve University gave a study group the group bupropion hydrochloride (Buspar.)  After just two weeks, one-third of the women tested responded to treatment with increased sexual arousal, sexual fantasy and interest in engaging in sexual activity. After eight weeks of treatment, nearly 40 percent said they were satisfied with their sexual desire, whereas before the treatment 100 percent of the women said they were dissatisfied

HSDD affects at least 20 percent of American women. There is currently no drug approved for treating the problem and researchers say psychotherapy is minimally effective.

The results of the study are published in the May-June issue of The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy .
